    2015-16 SHAC Notes

    October 17, 2016 Meeting Notes

    October 13, 2015 Meeting Notes:

Deann Lee welcomed everyone and introduced Chairwoman Amanda Schade.

Ms. Schade explained the purpose of SHAC, reviewed last year's goals and updated the committee on progress:

    * A brochure which has been distributed to all campuses was created last year which gives information concerning local shelters, food banks, mental health support, etc.

    * Dr. Eric Cupp, child psychologist who has worked with students for over 30 years will be in MISD 8 times throughout the year to address issues such as bullying, drugs, good choices, etc.  His visits will include student assemblies, small group discussions, parent meetings, and staff training.  The first parent meeting is October 20 from 6:30-7:30 at Millsap Elementary.

    * Tina Stevens, new Nutrition Services Director, is making positive changes to the cafeterias, food selections, etc.  She is open and happy to receive suggestions and will make as many adjustments as possible as allowed under federal and state guidelines.

Ms. Tina Stevens informed the group that the Nutrition Department will undergo an audit this year.  The Wellness Policy needs to be updated.  However, there were changes in legislation during the recent session and we are waiting for guidance from the Texas Association of School Boards.  We will meet to update the policy when that is received.  Click on the link to see the current policy.

A health fair was discussed to provide services for the community and to act as a fund raiser so SHAC can help the district in various ways.  Ms. Schade is checking on possible events at which a health fair would be well attended.

    December 8, 2015 Meeting Notes:

Amanda Schade, Chair, was unable to attend the meeting.  Therefore, Deann Lee, MISD Asst Superintendent, conducted the meeting.

Members were welcomed at 4:00 PM in the MHS Library.  Also welcomed were special guests attending to aid in the development of the Wellness Policy.  These included students- Anna Walker and Cort Beynon, PE representative- Brad Littlefield, and Food Services Director- Tina Stevens.

Deann Lee explained to the committee the difference between a Board-adopted Policy and a Plan.  She also explained the need for the Policy and Plan to be updated.  The Committee discussed a draft Wellness Plan.  Committee members will continue to contemplate the plan and offer suggestions until the next SHAC meeting at which the plan will be proposed for adoption.

The committee also discussed MISD's soon-to-be-released updated website.  The current website has a SHAC page, but it has not been recently updated.  The new website, however, will be current and kept up-to-date with required information according to the Wellness Plan and law.

The committee reviewed conversation from the previous meeting concerning a Health Fair and the limitations of conducting a fair.  Instead, the committee was asked to bring ideas for a district/community activity to the next meeting.

The next meeting will be in the MHS Library on Tuesday, February 9th at 4:00 pm.

The meeting was dismissed at 5:07 pm.

    February 9, 2016 Meeting Notes:

The committee was also informed that MISD has a new website and SHAC has its own section. The SHAC portion of the new MISD website is located at www.millsapisd.net.  Go to the Community tab, then School Health Advisory Council tab.  On the left are several pages which contain a wealth of information including the Wellness Policy and Plan.  SHAC Minutes are also posted on the website.

Ms. Schade announced that the last SHAC meeting of the year will be on April 12 from 4-5:30 in the MHS Library. At that time the 2015-16 year will be reviewed and discussion about plans for the 2016-17 school year will begin.
